Ice-hockey is one of the most wide-spread, ancient and favorite kinds of sports. The say that only real brave men can play ice-hockey. By the way, what is the country of origin of this game? It's rather a contradictory question. Some state that the homeland of ice-hockey was Netherlands as there are old saved pictures of about the 16th century in which a lot of Dutch people were shown playing a similar to ice-hockey game on a frozen channel in winter. However, traditionally Canada, the city of Montreal is considered to be the place of birth of ice-hockey.

Ice-hockey is a colorful, spectacular, dynamic team game which attracts millions of fans all over the world. World ice-hockey championships go full house. In 2009 the Congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) confirmed Minsk, the capital of Belarus to be the venue of the World Ice-Hockey Championship in 2014. It is going to take place in the city of Minsk from 9th of May till the 25th of May in 2014.

It is necessary to add that the process of selection of the venue of the World Ice-Hockey Championship in 2014 was rather difficult as there was a serious struggle that ended in the victory of Belarus. Belarus beat the other candidates including such countries as Ukraine, Hungary, Latvia, and others having got 75 votes. Nowadays the preparation for the championship in the capital of Belarus is in full swing.

Come to Minsk in 2014 and see one of the most spectacular sports events, and at the same time enjoy the beauty one of the quietest, safest and the most peace-loving and fascinating countries, located in the center of Europe that is called Belarus!

The World Ice-Hockey Championship, that is to take place from the 9th of May till the 25th of May in 2014, in the city of Minsk, is going to be already the 78th championship of IIHF. Belarus will have such a big international sports event on its territory for the 1st time. Among the countries of the former USSR, the World Ice-Hockey Championship took place only in Russia in both 2000 and 2007, and in Latvia in 2006.

Officially it is considered that there are two different reference points in the history of ice-hockey championships. The first reference point is the year of 1920 when there was the 1st World Ice-hockey Championship within the framework of the Summer Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. But in 1982 IIHF only assigned the status of the world championship to that ice-hockey championship. And since 1930 world ice-hockey championships have been held every year. That's why there are two equivalent historical dates in the history of ice-hockey championships. Nowadays Olympic and World Ice-Hockey Championships are two different championships.

 Ice-hockey is one of the most popular and favorite sports in Belarus. However, this game started to develop on the territory of this country only at the end of the 40s of the 20th century, after World War II. In spite of this, the national Belarusian ice-hockey team has always tried to do its best and as a result it already plays in the world ice-hockey arena with the strongest teams in the world. The best sports achievements of the national Belarusian ice-hockey team are the 4th place in the Olympic Games 2002, in Salt Lake City, the USA; and the 6th place in the World Ice-Hockey Championship in 2006.

It is also known that the main coach of the Belarusian ice-hockey national team is going to be Glen Hanlon, who is a Canadian ice-hockey experienced specialist as he played for the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings in the NHL, as well as the WCHL, Central Hockey League.  

16 international teams are going to take part in the World Ice-Hockey Championship in Minsk, in 2014. 13 ice-hockey teams are from Europe, they include such countries as Belarus (the organizer of the championship), Germany, Denmark, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Finland, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Sweden. From North America - Canada, and the USA, and from Asia - Kazakhstan.

The preparation for the World Ice-Hockey Championship 2014 in the Belarusian capital, the city of Minsk is in full swing. It is known that some representatives of IIHF have come for a visit and check to Minsk already some times. But they didn't find any violation and were only satisfied with the preparation. As Belarus is not simply preparing for the championship but it is in advance of the planed preparation schedule.

Belarus has got all the necessary conditions of holding of The World Ice-Hockey Championship in 2014 and it will try to do its best to make all the sportsmen and guests of the country feel comfortable and enjoyed.

One of them is "Minsk-Arena" that was opened on the 30th of January in 2009 that can hold 15,000 viewers. VISA FREE Entry To Belarus!
A warm welcome to one and all...

If you will ask how to get a Belarusian visa, then no worries! The Belarusian authorities have decided to make free visa entry for all the guests of the Republic of Belarus for the period of the championship (from the 25th of April till the 31st Of May, in 2014). The most important thing for getting the free visa entry to Belarus is having an original or electronic ticket to the championship. It is also a very nice opportunity to discover one more new country in the center of Europe for those who have never been to Belarus as this country can offer a lot of interesting things to see.

As for the tickets cost, the lowest tickets to the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk will be around EURO10, the highest ones will be around EURO50, and the tickets for the final matches are going to be around EURO50.

The mascot and the logo of the 2014 IIHF World Championship have also been chosen. As for the mascot, it is a basin hockey-player, and it was created by Vitali Ortuh, who is a professional artist and designer from Minsk. The basin is considered to be the symbol of Belarus and the king of animals in Belarusian forests, who are very graceful endangered animals. But unlike real Belarusian basins, the Belarusian basin mascot has got a real name, it is Volat. Very soon it will join the other mascots - ice-hockey players of the previous championships. The mascot is considered to be the property of IIHF.

As for the logo of the World Ice-Hockey Championship 2014, there is an ice-hockey player surrounded with the national colors of the Republic of Belarus in it. The logo looks very bright and decent. Its main colors are red, green and white taken from the flag of Belarus. What do these colors symbolize? Since ancient times, the red color is considered to be the sign of the sun, symbolizes ties of blood, brotherhood, fight for right deeds. At the same time it the sign of victory and happy life. The green color is the color of nature, kindness, growth, well-being and peace. The white color is the color of freedom, moral purity and wisdom. 

As you can see the colors of the Belarusian flag and the Belarusian mascot of the championship 2014 depict Belarus clearly. Belarus is a peace loving country where friendly tolerant people live; who are always ready to help even without knowing the English language. Nowadays, it has even become a home country for people of different nations.

• The word "hockey" has got French roots. As the name of this game was derived from the French word "hoquet" that meant "a sheep hook".

Especially, as this question would be perfect for the fairer sex, and most probably the answer would be "A polished warrior who is ready to do everything for the lady of his heart". It is not a problem for him to kill a dragon, bring all the riches of the world to her feet, and love her till the end of time. It sounds so romantic, and reminds us all of a beautiful fairy-tail,

Who hasn't dreamt to possibly return back to the medieval times, and be able to see with at least one eye covered these noble knights, and brave warriors fight tournaments with each other in honor of their lovely ladies or for the fulfillment of some other noble vows? Then what better place could you visit then this small country in the middle of Europe called Belarus, where you would get a chance to explore such duals once again!

Belarusian lands lie on the crossroads of Europe due to which they always attracted conquerors from different countries. This further led to the need of courageous strong soldiers to protect them, who were known as noble knights. In medieval times, in the 13th century, Belarusian lands were first part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and later part of Rzecz Pospolita. In those old times, on Belarusian lands various subunits of knights were formed and various wooden fortresses were erected on borders for the defense of principalities against conquerors, for example, such as crusaders. The knight was a warrior with a keen sense of self-worth. In any battle he was dependant only on himself, and could become famous, by showing his bravery, the strength of his armor and the speed of his horse. In a battle knights were always very fair towards their enemies showing their grace and mercy all the time. As those times, the victory meant to drive the enemy out of the saddle and take him prisoner. Unfortunately, with the emergence of firearms, the armor stopped to be a strong protection, and knights lost their specific position in the society.

However, in Belarus, at the end of 20th century knights started to come back, as knights clubs, and later knights tournaments and festivals were created. The main medieval festivals and knights tournaments in Belarus are held in Novogrudok, Zaslavl, Nesvizh and Mir. There you can meet young men and girls in medieval hand-made costumes and to watch knights' tournaments which have already become a tradition in Belarus. You will have the possibility to take some amazing pictures and make memories you will want to relive. A Belarusian knights festivals is a must see!

Knights tournaments in Mir Castle!
A must see when you visit Belarus. 

 In summer, you can find yourself in medieval times visiting one of the most beautiful castles in Belarus - 'Mir Castle', that is located 90 km from Minsk, the capital of Belarus. Usually in June and July, knights tournaments take place here, and they are very much similar to Western European jousts of the 14th- 16th centuries.

Also every year they organize the international knight tournament here that is called "The Heritage of Centuries", in which about 800 participants from different countries take part. Costumes, armor, arms, mode of life match fully the era in which the warriors lived, and fought. In order to take part in such medieval tournaments, a knight-participant has to own a whole set of arming. But you can't buy ready armor, as they are always made with hands and very unique. Each piece of the metal harness matches its historical analog. All modern armor of knights is about 30 kilos, however in medieval times they were much heavier, and warriors could run, lie down on their stomachs, and get up without help.

Knights tournaments usually begin with a solemn presentation of all knights-participants. Every knight shows his symbol - the emblem, and also presents his slogan. Heraldic symbols are very important, as they can tell a lot about the personality of knights. The sword of knights is the most important symbol of medieval times. The knight used to have it with him all the time, even not wearing all his armor, otherwise he used to be considered naked in front of all people. The dedication into a knight was made also with the help of the sword and its handle was like a cross.

During such medieval festivals, all participants try to follow the mode of life of those ancient times, not only while taking part in battles, but also while having a rest: they usually live in tents, chop wood, prepare food on fire. Girls cook dishes that are typical of medieval times. One of the favorite and popular recipes of the festival is the "Lombard Cheese Soup, the main ingredients of which are celery, a hard kind of cheese, parsley, dill, leek and salt.

Some other magnificent Belarusian Castle, that is called Nesvizh Castle, is located near Mir Castle, around 112 kms from the city of Minsk and it also holds such medieval events as knights tournaments from time to time. Nesvizh Palace & Park complex is the most famous in Belarus, and it was included in the list of World Heritage of UNESCO in 2006. It is also famous for its ghost "Black Lady" wandering around the corridors of Nesvizh Castle during moonless nights. It is the spirit of Barbara Radzivill, who was the Polish King's wife - Zhigimont August II. However, you'll get to know more interesting facts about the ghost Black Lady in our next Blogger lens.

In The Medieval Times. 

 The Knight tournament is a military competition of knights in medieval Western Europe. They were created in the 11th century, and the country of origin was France. Geoffrey de Preili was called the father of the knights tournament, as this Frenchman created the rules for the 1st tournaments. The most interesting fact is that he was killed during one of such knights tournaments, for which he had created the rules himself. The main purpose of the 1st knights tournaments in France for warriors was to show their physical strength, stamina and courage. Such medieval festivals were mainly organized in honor of solemn events such as marriage ceremonies of kings or the birth of heirs.

Only a well-trained man could become a knight. In medieval times, feudal who fought for their king or representatives of the upper class could become knights. There were also 7 virtues, which the knight had to possess or know how to do: riding, fencing, the art of using the spear, swimming, hunting, playing chess, composing and singing verses in honor of the lady of his heart.

History of Ginger!
Ginger or Zingiber Officinale 

Ginger or Zingiber Officinale (Scientific name) reaches back 5000 years when the Indian and ancient Chinese used the root as a medicine to cure all types of ailments. Ginger was cultivated not only in India and China but in many other countries. In the earlier days, huge exports from India to Rome were made as the Romans used it quite extensively in their meals but after the collapse of the Roman Empire, the Arabs followed and took over the spice trade. Ginger then was quite an expensive commodity, and was used to make sweets.

Ginger comes from the same family as cardamom and turmeric. They all have a heating effect and are used very much in Asian Cuisines. It is used in raw or in a paste format to bring about flavor and enhance the taste of the dish.

I am sure you all must have heard of the famous 'Ginger Man!' who was invented by Queen Elizabeth I of England which became a very popular Christmas Treat. Now Ginger is easily available at different grocery stores for a few Dollars but long ago it would cost a fortune as it wasn't used so much until as late as the 11th Century in the western countries where it was used to enhance the taste of buttermilk drinks.

The Making of Ginger!

Ginger is a root plant that has both medicinal and taste enhancing properties. It is used very extensively now a days in culinary dishes due to its warming effect. The plant originates from Southeast Asia with India being the largest producer of the spice due to its sub-tropical climate. The ginger plant & its roots grow to a height of up-to 4 feet and have a bunch of flowers in the colors of pink & white which is actually very beautiful. Many people in India grow Ginger in their pots at home and it really looks beautiful but Ginger is also commercially produced on a large scale as well with India having more then hundreds of cultivators growing the Ginger Plant for its essential oils.

Dry Ginger has more essential oils in it so its use is also determined when its been harvested. In this case then if it is to be used as fresh or for preservation then it is harvested when it is about 5 months old as the mass of roots are still soft and tender and not quite poignant. Then dried Ginger has a stronger aromatic essence and flavor which is why it is harvested at 8 or 9 months, at times possibly even more.

The use of machine diggers is now available to harvest Ginger but to preserve traditions then the plant is harvested majorly by hand, after which they are either sold fresh, dried or their oils extracted. In the case of dried Ginger powder then the mass of roots are boiled or scraped and then dried after which they are grounded to make the Ginger powder we now get in the stores or have in our kitchens.

Ingredients

• 1 Cup of Water
• 1/2 Cup of Milk
• 2 Cloves
• 3 to 4 cardomom pods
• 1/2 inch piece Ginger
• chopped and crushed
• 1 small cinnamon stick or 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
• 2 Teaspoons - Tea leaves / Tea powder (Preferable)
• Sugar (As per your taste)

Instructions

1. Masala Tea!

Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan, and heat till it begins to boil. Next add, the crushed ginger, cloves, cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks or powder and boil for a few more minutes till a strong odor of natural herbs rises. Then add the tea leaves or tea powder, milk, and on low heat boil for another minute or so. Switch of the heat and strain into a cup and enjoy this wonderful concoction of natural 'Dhaba' (Street side tea stall) tea!

2. Cardamom Tea!

Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan, and heat till it begins to boil. Next add, the cardamom pods, and boil for a few more minutes till a strong odor of the cardamom rises. Then add the tea leaves or tea powder, milk, and on low heat boil for another minute or so. Switch of the heat and strain into a cup and enjoy the cardamom tea! 

3. Ginger Tea!

Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan, and heat till it begins to boil. Next add, the crushed ginger, and boil for a few more minutes till a strong odor of the ginger rises. Then add the tea leaves or tea powder, milk, and on low heat boil for another minute or so. Switch of the heat and strain into a cup and enjoy the ginger tea!

 Note: Milk can be put in when boiling or heated separately and added later into the poured tea. However, if at times the tea has become too strong or you by mistake made it strong then you can pour the milk in a cup 'first', and then add the tea over it which will make the tea light and pleasing in taste.

While staying in Minsk, you can find a calm colorful paradise in the center of the noisy capital of Belarus which will impress everyone. The name of this wonderful place located in the pine woods is the Central Botanical Garden. It came into existence in 1932. Nowadays the Central Botanical Garden is one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe. It is a museum of living plants in the open air, and its total square is 153 hectares. On the territory of the Central Botanical Garden you can find about 10.000 of various species of plants from every corner of our amazing and big planet. It fascinates its visitors all round the year. Before the Botanical Garden was closed from November till April, but in 2007 the Greenhouse was opened there due to which the Botanical Garden now operates all year round."

In the Central Botanical Garden the floral diversity has got a magical effect because flowers are a remainder of paradise, they are something extraterrestrial, something perfect, and something incredible. In Minsk Botanical Garden the exposition "Flowers of the world" exists, where in spring and summer visitors can see a big amount of fascinating flowering bushes and flowers. It consists of 300 kinds of peonies, 500 species of tulips, more than 50 kinds of lilacs, also various species of daffodils, irises, gladiolus's, lilies, asters, dahlias, and of course roses.

In the Greenhouse there are more than 460 kinds of exotic plants from different climatic zones of the planet. There you can see evergreen plants such as palms, tropical ferns, olive-trees, magnolias, oleanders, orchids, banana-trees; citruses such as lemon-trees, orange-trees, mandarin-trees, coffee trees, evergreen jasmines and many others.
  
In Minsk Botanical Garden there is also the "Arboretum" that is famous for its collection of coniferous trees. All trees and bushes there are divided into some geographical sectors: North America; Australia; Europe; Central Asia; Caucasus and Crimea; Far East and Siberia.

In the center of Botanical Garden there is a small picturesque lake, whose inhabitants are graceful swans; tortoises, who love basking in the sun; and restless carps, who emerge from the water fast, dance in the air for a few split seconds and again hide deep in the water.

In every corner of the Central Botanical Garden, you can find lots of comfortable benches to have some rest and enjoy amazing songs of birds or you can go for a walk through one of the alleys such as the alley of birch trees, of rowan-trees, maples, thujas, linden-trees, fir-trees, oak-trees.

All the beautiful and picturesque places of the Central Botanical Garden will make you forget all the difficulties, and problems that are behind the territory of this cozy area of wildlife.

The pride of Botanical Gardens all over the world is the flower that is called the Titanic Amorphophallus or Amorphophallus Titanium in Latin. Sometimes it is also called the Devil Tongue, the Voodoo lily, the Umbrella Palm or the Snake Palm.

It is considered to be the biggest and the most unusual flower in the world, and for the first time it was discovered in 1878. This unique flower comes from tropical woods of the island Sumatra, Indonesia and savannahs of India, China, and Vietnam. The height of this plant can be till 3 meters, and the length of its leaves can vary till 5 meters. Its underground tuber is about 50 kilos. This amazing plant can live up to 40 years, however it can bloom only 3 or 4 times during its whole life. The process of blooming lasts for about two weeks. When it is over, then the plant ear heats up to 40 degrees, and the flower produces a very strong odor of rotten eggs or spoiled fish so as to attract insects for its pollination. That's why the plant is also sometimes called the Corpse Flower. After blooming Amorphophallus titanium hibernates in order to return back all the used nutrients.

In China and it is becoming popular in some other countries, they use tubers of this plant as a dietary product for reducing the level of cholesterol and sugar in blood. In medicine these tubers are used as a raw for producing dietary products. In countries of Indo-China they are also used for preparing meals.

The smallest flower in the world is called the Rootless Wolffia or Wolffia Arrhiza in Latin that comes from tropical woods of Africa and Asia. It belongs to the family of Lemnaceae plants. It is a very tiny, looks like an oval light-green plate that is only one millimeter and grows only in water. The RootlessWolffia blooms so seldom, that many botanists spend a half of their life to find out its flower that is smaller than a pinhead.

 It is a very unique plant, as it is not afraid at all of the cold winter, and extreme hot summer. Till autumn, the Rootless Wolffia accumulates a great amount of starch, due to which it is able to survive during winter on the bottom, and in spring it is able again to rise to the surface. It is one of the most favorite plants among amateurs of aquariums.
